Tips to Help Minimize Dog Hair Shedding

Dogs shed their fur usually twice per year, but you're going to find dog hair throughout your home every single day in between too. If you don't like fur being on just about every surface of your home, a dog as a pet just isn't for you. The good news is you can help minimize the amount of shedding you find throughout your house. Follow the tips below to minimize shedding of your furry pal.

Proper Nutrition

If your dog is lacking vitamins and minerals or fats and proteins in his diet, it could cause excessive shedding. Be sure your dog is being fed properly with food high in protein and fats, and isn't being fed with fillers in his dog food. Visit a veterinary clinic about which food is best for your buddy.

Clean Water

Be sure your dog has clean and fresh water throughout the day every single day. Don't leave water to sit for days on end, as it's going to accumulate with dust and dander. If you have a dog that is outside most of the time, be sure to change this water often as well. Also make sure your dog is drinking plenty of water. Keep an eye on his water intake.

Minimize Stress

Stress and anxiety in dogs can cause excessive shedding as well. Try your best to minimize the stress levels of your pup to cut back on shedding fur. If your dog has a hard time with thunderstorms or loud noises such as fireworks, talk to your veterinarian about getting anti-anxiety medication for your pup to help. If your dog has issues with separation anxiety, try to crate your pup during the day and leave something of yours inside such as a shirt that has your scent on it to provide comfort.

Use Oils

Give your pup fish oil or coconut oil to help improve their skin and give them a shiny coat. A healthier skin and coat of fur will prevent his fur from falling out as much.

Brush Often

Brush your dog often to get rid of excess fur and prevent it from getting all of your house. Use a dog brush and brush outside of your house. You can brush daily if your dog has a lot of fur, or at least once per week.

Unless your dog is completely hairless, he is most likely going to shed. Provide proper nutrition, fresh water and brush your dog often to get rid of excess fur.
